Here are some crafts I have made.
I like to make things with my hands, and I also like to not look at computer screens. Here are some of the things I’ve made over the years.
This is an embroidery of a Fly Agaric (Amanita muscaria) mushroom.
This piece was difficult to capture digitally. I am a writer not a photographer but hopefully you can still see how it’s 3D. I used an embroidery technique called “stumpwork” to create that pop-out effect. It makes for such a charming little piece of art. The pattern for this is by embroidery artist Pippa Haynes whose work, centered around flowers and fungi, is a constant inspiration to me.
This is a cross-stitch I completed in October of 2021. The pattern was created by one of my favorite fiber artists Beast or God as part of a stitch-a-long that took place over the Halloween season. It’s based on one of my favorite shows Over the Garden wall and was my first real attempt at cross-stitch.
Overall the process is very relaxing, but counting correctly can be a challenge when the stitches are small and my eyes are bad. Do I need to do four more stitches of 919 DMC thread or three? I won’t find out until an hour later when something looks wonky and I have a headache from staring at this dizzying grid fabric for too long.
This is a linen shirt I sewed. Previous to this project, my sewing has been a little shifty and very homemade-looking. This was the first time I have ever constructed a collar like this and I’m absolutely floored at how it turned out. Like, look at that shirt, that is a shirt you’d wear to work or something, right? Good stuff.
Please ignore that there are no buttons, sewing the shirt tired me out and I didn’t feel like putting them on for this picture. I will not update this when I do.
This is a pair of socks I knitted. I had only attempted to knit socks once before and failed miserably. I’m happy to say these turned out much better.
